targus ACH121US

is there anyone have successfully used this targus ACH121US, with ethernet and 3 usb connection? I find this device handy as it caters two things at one device. But I'm struggling to connect through to the internet using ethernet port on this device. I downloaded the driver, installed, connect to ethernet, set to automatic dhcp settings, manual IP settings, etc. It says in my network that it is connected to dhcp server but not connected to the internet. I called targus, and they are saying that maybe it is not compatible with OSX mavericks OS. I find it hard to believe.... Is there anyone out there that have bought this type of device and manage to find their way to connect through the internet? Or, is there any some sort of firewall in MAC OSX that prevent this device to go through to the net?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I know this is an old thread but I have an update... It appears the issue is the driver needed to be re-signed for the more recent versions of Mac OS X. For those who have the Targus ACH121US and are trying to use it with Mavericks or later (I am using El Capitan) you can obtain a current driver from the ASIX website. ASIX manufactures the Ethernet chip in the Targus device.

Steps:

  1. Visit http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php?sub=downloadsearch&PSNoID=101
  2. For "Product Family" select "USB 2.0 to Fast Ethernet" and for "Product Name" choose "AX88772B"
  3. For "Files Type" select "Driver" and click "Go"
  4. Look for the Apple driver (i.e., "Apple Mac OS X 10.5 to 10.11 Drivers Installer")
  5. Unzip the download, mount the DMG and launch the PKG file
Note: the DMG file contains a PDF providing more detailed installation instructions
  6. Reboot when the installation completes

Enjoy!

You need to give the IP range of your router, and the manual IP settings you are using in the Mac.

If this Targus box is in between the router and the Mac it would normal either to turn dhcp in the Targus off, or ensure it is in the same range as the router. Ditto any manual IP settings in the Mac need to match the default gateway of the router, not the Targus.

Bottom line, everything should be 192.168.x.something, all have the same x, fixed IP should be well up the range, default gateways must match.

Thanks peter for your reply. I noticed that when I first used my targus to connect to the internet using ethernet connection. Targus has self assigning IP. 169.x.x.x. What I did then is to connect again using my mobile broadband and noticed that mac and my mobile IP is 192.168.x.x. So what I did next is to ignore the automatic dhcp settings set by targus and set my IP configuration to manual. I configured my IP based on 192.168.x.x from my targus, whch is the same as my router ethernet. In which, I managed to see my connection in mac network in green led on left. But in saying that, I wasn't able to connect thru to the internet.

So you have mobile broadband, with 192.168.x.x, so it is a mifi of some sort? Are you trying to connect to mobile broadband via USB and the Targus? Out of my experience. Maybe someone else can help.

Or do you have a fixed line router modem too?

IPs starting 169 are default USB assigned by the computer and IPs starting 192.168 are ethernet local issued by the router usually.

I've had one of these for a while. It was a great device with my MacBook Air when I need an Ethernet port. Since I upgraded to Mavericks, I cannot get the ethernet port to work. USB ports still work, but it no longer recognizes the Ethernet port. The adapter still works on a PC, so I know its good. Tried re-downloading the drivers from Targus, but still no luck. It's a Mavericks issue.
